DESCRIPTION:On July 5th at 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm the Astronomy Center will host a Jupiter encounter event for the Juno Spacecraft. This is a special planetarium presentation. Over the next few years Juno will study Jupiter’s formation\, map its magnetic field\, measure water and ammonia levels in its atmosphere\, observe auroral activity\, and even try to determine if there is a solid core under all those clouds. We’ll be showcasing the first set of Juno images\, streaming NASA TV\, and have lots of information about both the planet and the space probe. Join us for this spectacular event in the planetarium!

SUMMARY:Perseid Meteor Shower
DESCRIPTION:In cooperation with the Hirundo Wildlife Refuge\, we will be hosting a meteor viewing star party at the Maynard F. Jordan Observatory\, located just behind the Emera Astronomy Center. The Perseid shower is an annual event where the Earth passes through the cloud of debris left behind by the comet Swift-Tuttle. The small pieces of rock that fall toward the earth burn up in our atmosphere\, producing a dazzling light show. \nThe event will also include a guided constellation tour and an insect trap to inspect many night-flying insects like moths and beetles. \nThe event runs from 9pm to 4am the night of August 11\, and visitors are welcome to come and go as they please. \nReserve your place under the stars by August 9th. Space is limited\, so click here to register. Suggested donation $5 adults\, $3 children under 12. \nThis event is weather dependent and we have a rain date set for Saturday\, August 12.

SUMMARY:Solar Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:While here in Maine we will be unable to see a total solar eclipse\, we will be able to see about 60% of the sun’s disk covered by the moon. These events are very rare to see without travel\, so make sure to mark it on your calendar. The eclipse begins at approximately 1:35 pm\, and ends at approximately 3:55 pm. We will be hosting a free eclipse viewing event here at the Astronomy Center from 1:00 to 4:00 where we will have special solar telescopes\, sun spotters\, and special eclipse viewing glasses. Our staff will be on hand to explain the phenomena and help everyone see it safely. \nUnfortunately\, this event is WEATHER DEPENDENT\, so if the sky is cloudy we will not be able to see it. NASA and many other organizations will be doing their own streaming events that you can watch online. \nSince the moon will not cover the entire sun from our vantage point in Maine\, it is very important to not look directly at it at any point\, as even a brief glimpse can cause severe eye damage. Special glasses/equipment are needed to protect your eyes. Normal sunglasses are not enough! \nTo celebrate the eclipse\, the public show each Friday night for the month of August is Totality: Explore the Wonder of Eclipses. We also offer two additional showings the morning of the eclipse at 10:00 and 11:30 to prepare for the event. You can buy tickets to these shows online\, over the phone\, or at the door.

DESCRIPTION:Potential Cancer Cures Leveraging 3D Tissue Engineering and Bone Marrow Models\nThursday\, October 5 at 7:00 pm \nJoin us as we explore new ways to develop 3D models of cancer and bone marrow cells. Experience how fluorescent imaging of cells and biomaterials can bring biomedical research to life. Fly through confocal microscopy images of 3D silk scaffolds supporting bone marrow adipose tissue and cancer cells. Get a better sense of how cells look and act in 3D. Learn about the types of relationships cells have in the bone marrow and how researchers are leveraging these to design new ways of stopping cancer growth. \n  \nDr. Michaela Reagan is a Faculty Scientist at the Maine Medical Center Research Institute\, an Assistant Professor at the Tufts Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences\, and a Graduate Faculty Member at U. Maine in the GSBSE program. She obtained her BS in Engineering from Harvey Mudd College and her PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Tufts University. Dr. Reagan performed her post-doctoral fellowship research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Harvard Medical School. Dr. Reagan runs the Bioengineering Core at MMCRI and her research group is focused on developing better 3D in vitro models of cancer in the bone\, designing nanomedicine to target bone cancers\, and elucidating the biological mechanisms behind the interactions of bone cells and tumor cells. DESCRIPTION:The Science of Wellness:  Why Your Doctor Continues to Insist You Sleep\, Exercise\, and Be Well\nThursday\, February 1 at 7:00 pm \nSleep and exercise are vital parts of what allows us to function and thrive. We rely on sleep to generate growth\, form new memories\, and promote healing.  Exercise promotes strength\, muscle development\, balance and makes us feel good. Without these\, our productivity suffers\, our immunity wanes\, and our minds dull.  Join us as we explore how sleep and exercise achieve these things and why they are so important.  We will be looking at the physiology of sleep and exercise\, focusing on the sleep cycle\, the effects of cortisol and endorphins on various organ systems\, and how these organ systems work together to promote wellness. \n \nDr. Nicole Rausch is a third year family medicine resident physician at EMMC Family Medicine Center and Residency. She completed her Bachelors of Science in Biology at the College of Charleston and medical school at Lincoln Memorial University DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine. SUMMARY:Who's Your Daddy: A Dramatic Reading Under the Stars
DESCRIPTION:Published by Augury Books earlier this year\, Who’s Your Daddy is Arisa White’s debut poetic memoir\, which poet Patricia Smith says\, “unreels like heart-wrenching fragments of film.” It is a lyrical\, genre-bending coming-of-age tale featuring a queer\, Black\, Guyanese American woman who\, while seeking to define her own place in the world\, negotiates an estranged relationship with her father. Incorporating poetry and prose\, Who’s Your Daddy employs the motif of stars and constellations to navigate and populate the distance that characterizes this father-daughter dynamic.  Arisa will read excerpts from the book accompanied by original music by José G. Martinez and student vocalists from Colby College. Artistic direction provided by Ellen Sebastian Chang and funding provided by Colby College’s Humanities Research. \n  \n    \n  \nArisa White is an assistant professor of English and Creative Writing at Colby College. She is the author of Who’s Your Daddy\, co-editor of Home Is Where You Queer Your Heart\, and co-author of Biddy Mason Speaks Up\, the second book in the Fighting for Justice Series for young readers. Her poetry collections have won the Nautilus Book Award\, Maine Literary Book Award\, Per Diem Poetry Prize\, Augury Book Prize\, and have been nominated for an NAACP Image Award\, Lambda Literary Award\, California Book Award\, and Wheatley Book Award. Arisa has received residencies\, fellowships\, or scholarships from The Ground Floor at Berkeley Rep\, Juniper Summer Writing Institute\, Headlands Center for the Arts\, Port Townsend Writers’ Conference\, Squaw Valley Community of Writers\, Hedgebrook\, Atlantic Center for the Arts\, Prague Summer Program\, Fine Arts Work Center\, and Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference. As the creator of the Beautiful Things Project\, Arisa curate’s poetic collaborations that center queer BIPOC narratives. She is a Cave Canem fellow and serves on the board of directors for Foglifter and Nomadic Press and is a community advisory board member for MWPA. SUMMARY:Telescopes\, Binoculars\, and Stargazing
DESCRIPTION:  \nDid you get a telescope or binoculars for Christmas?  Have questions on how they work or how to get started using them?  Join two experienced observers and planetarium directors on Saturday\, February 5th at 4:00 pm at the Versant Power Astronomy Center to get started on your celestial journey.   Shawn Laatsch and John Meader will guide participants on how binoculars and telescopes work\, ways to set them up\, and how to find objects in Maine’s night sky.  They will share a variety of resources for stargazing from books to websites to aps and more. Bring your binoculars and telescopes with you\, and weather permitting we will set up outside and do observing following the presentation. \n  \nJohn Meader is the owner and director of Northern Stars Planetarium\, a portable planetarium business that has served Maine schools for over 30 years. He is an avid sky observer\, astro-photographer\, and Registered Maine Guide. John serves as the vice president for Dark Sky Maine – a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the night skies.  He loves canoeing\, hiking\, and the outdoors. John is also a UMaine grad who got his start as student director of the old planetarium in Wingate Hall in 1979. \n  \nShawn Laatsch is director of the Versant Power Astronomy Center at the University of Maine.  He has over 30 years of experience in planetariums and sharing the night sky with people of all ages.  He built his first telescope in 1985 for observing Haley’s Comet.  Shawn is a former president of the International Planetarium Society and currently serves as treasurer for Dark Sky Maine. \n  \nTickets are $10 a person. DESCRIPTION:In ancient times\, Greek astronomers understood that planets are not like the stars\, because they move in a different way in our skies. Why do they move the way they do? What are they made of? And what about the Moon? Is it really a perfect object with a smooth surface? To answer these questions\, we have the need to give a closer look to the sky using something that can make our sight sharper and deeper. It’s from this need that our story begins. \n  \n \n  \nThis is a special presentation from Ms. Elena Lazzaretto. Ms. Lazzaretto began her career as Scientific Communicator with the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (www.inaf.it) and began working at the Planetarium of Padova in 2011 where she is the planetarium astronomer and an educator with extensive knowledge about full-dome live show scripting\, computer graphics\, sound design and event organization. She is also a Freelance Scientific Communicator and teaches Math and Physics at High Schools in Padova\, Italy. \n  \n\n  \nTickets for planetarium programs are $7 for Adults\, $6 for UMaine Students/Veterans/Senior Citizens\, and $5 for children under 12.
